Frequently
Asked Questions- Paragauge system
What is the concept behind Paragauge?
Using a system of measuring so simple its
virtually foolproof, Paragauge is the first precision measuring instrument designed to act
as a variable spaced parallel block for setting the rip fence directly to the
cutting edge of the blade.
How does the Paragauge system work?
Its simple, all you need to do is
set your measurement on each of the precision rules which are imbedded in the aluminum
rails. The gauge itself will transfer the exact measurement to the saw by providing
a parallel block to position between the fence and saw blade. Once on the table surface,
you simply slide your fence over to the gauge and while holding the fence to the gauge,
youre now able to lock your fence in position without having to worry about any
unnecessary movement caused by the locking mechanism
I really have a cheap (and inaccurate) 8 inch
table top saw that I paid less than a $100 for back 10 years ago. Do you really think the
Paragauge can help it.
Certainly, this is exactly the type of saw
Paragauge was invented for. Your first problem with the saw is probably a poorly designed
fence, followed by chronic blade misalignment. As both problems are design related, you
probably cant fix them, however, with Paragauge actually using the cutting edge of
the blade as the base for measurement and the gauge itself acting as a stationary object
to rest the fence against as its being locked in place, both problems are easily
eliminated.
I sometimes have problems with binding and
burning, will Paragauge help?
Yes! By actually using the cutting edge
of the blade to set your fence, you can actually eliminate some of the causes of binding
and burning i.e., misaligned blade, incorrectly set fence or damage to the blade you may
not be aware of.
I frequently change blade types depending on
what kind of wood Im working with. Do I need to re-calibrate the Paragauge like I do
the scale on my fence.
No! Since Paragauge actually sets the
distance from the cutting edge of the blade, it doesnt matter if youre using a
fine tooth blade or carbide tip blade -- the results will always be the same.
Periodically, I need to re-calibrate the
fence I currently use on my saw. Will I run into the same problem with Paragauge?
Absolutely not! Paragauge provides
precision aluminum scales which are permanently affixed and calibrated at the
factory.
The plans I use sometimes provide
measurements in the Metric format. Do I need to buy two separate gauges?
No! The scales used on the Paragauge
provide measurements in both English and Metric formats in increments as small as 32nds of
an inch
Ive been thinking of purchasing an
after-market fence to add to my saw. What are some of the big differences between the two
products?
First of all, the Paragauge is not a fence, it
is only a way to provide your current fence improved accuracy. Secondly, the Paragauge
costs less than $50 not the $300 $400 or even $500 that a good parallel locking fence can
cost. And finally, the Paragauge is completely portable and can be used on virtually any
piece of equipment in your shop. If you purchase an aftermarket fence, it only gets
mounted to a single piece of equipment and basically performs a single function.
After repeated use (and setting the gauge at
frequently used increments), will the Paragauge rails ever be damaged by over tightening
of the set screws?
They shouldnt. The aluminum rails are made
of aircraft grade aluminum and tempered for strength and durability. In addition, at the
base of each screw there is a small nylon bushing which acts as a buffer between the screw
and rail preventing actual contact between the two metal surfaces.
Will the depth of blade scale wear off over
time?
While its hard to see in the photo, the
depth of blade scale is actually engraved in the plate and filled with a special
automotive paint. While you may see some wear due to contact with the cutting edge of the
blade, the scale should remain usable for the life of the gauge. |
