Why Squeak-Relief is so effective is simple; in fact, it’s so simple it’s virtually impossible to screw up (pun intended). With the solid aluminum brace providing both structural support and guidance for the two power drive screws, the Squeak-Relief system actually pulls the floor and joist together and creates a mechanical lock right inside the floor.

How Squeak-Relief Works:

With the brace placed between the floor and joist, the set-pin is inserted through the brace and into the joist for positioning. The next step re-secures the subfloor to the joist using two power drive screws of different length and diameter. These screws penetrate both the joist and subfloor pulling both tightly together, thus eliminating the root cause of the squeak. Squeak-Relief is safe to use on any 5/8" or thicker subfloor.

With the brace adding structural support, the set-pin (in horizontally) and the two power drive screws (in at 30 degrees), makes it virtually impossible for the newly created bond to ever work its way loose. For overkill, the system even takes advantage of the original nail to create a horizontal and vertical lock, making the repair absolutely permanent and guaranteed for the life of the floor.

Squeak-Relief Installation:

Step 1: Locate the squeak. The easiest way is to have someone walk in the area while viewing the subfloor from below. When the damaged area is walked on, you should hear the squeak and see some movement between the floor and joist. Once you locate the area needing repair, proceed to Step 2. Top: While not required, we always recommend that the same person remain in the area while you secure the brace. This will help compress the floor aiding in installation.

Step 2: Insert the brace. Place the brace as shown and insert the aluminum positioning pin through the small hole (center of brace) and hammer in place. For optimum performance, the small flange should fit snugly between the floor and joist. If the floor is so loose that the subfloor is raised from the joist, allowing the brace to “float” freely, always apply a slight downward pull on the brace (when inserting the positioning pin) to ensure that the bottom of the flange rests on the top of the joist rather than the top of the flange being pushed up against the bottom of the subfloor. Once secured, proceed to Step 3.

Step 3: Fasten the screws. Once pinned in position, continue by inserting and fastening the top (1 ¼”) screw, followed by the bottom (3”) screw.

Note: The two power drive screws included with the kit are sized for ⅝” and thicker subfloors. Do not use any other size screws, as this may damage the floor and/or cause serious personal injury.

Caution: Whenever working in an area above your head, always wear safety glasses for eye protection and always be careful when working around plumbing pipes, gas lines and electrical cables!

I’m really not handy, is it hard to install?

Not at all. Just locate the squeak, insert the brace, pin it and screw it in. Total time about 60 seconds. Predrilling is never required and the only tool you’ll need is a drill or power screwdriver. All the necessary hardware is included with the bracing.

How many do you need to make a repair?

Just one Squeak-Relief per squeak is all it takes!

How does Squeak-Relief come packaged?

For small jobs, we have a handy six pack for six separate repairs and for bigger jobs we have a Contractor 12 Pack good for twelve separate repairs.

What makes Squeak-Relief the preferred method of repair?

What makes our product so effective and virtually foolproof, is the fact, that Squeak-Relief not only adds additional structural support and fasteners to the damaged area, but it also takes advantage of the original nail (which was installed during the floor’s construction) to make the bond permanent. It’s not just foolproof, it’s idiot proof!

How does Squeak-Relief use the original nail to make the repair?

In about 99% of all construction (that used nails as fasteners), the nails are simply installed vertically into the subfloor and can now freely move up and down (vertically) every time you walk on the floor. With the Squeak-Relief system adding support and fasteners all working at a 30 degree angle, once the brace is installed and fastened, the floor would actually have to move in two different directions at the same time to ever break its bond (up vertically along the shaft of the nail and off at 30 degrees along the shaft of the screws). What’s the best way to find the area needing repair?

The easiest way is to have someone walk in the area as you look at the floor from below. Once you hear the squeak, you should see some movement such as the floor being pushed against the joist.

Should I pre-drill the holes to make putting in the screws a little easier?

Absolutely not! As most joists are usually made of a soft wood such as pine, the screws usually have little problem being screwed in place. In addition, if you were to pre-drill the holes, going in too far could cause serious damage to your floor covering. If you have difficulty in screwing in the screws, an easy solution is to add a little soap to the screw before installation.

Are there any secrets to getting good results?

As the brace and screws were designed to do most of the work, all you really need to do is locate the exact position of the damaged area. And as locating the squeak is sometimes the most difficult part, we even made that easier by designing a product which can easily be removed and reinstalled in an adjacent area if you have difficulty in locating the exact position of the squeak. Our only other recommendation is that you have someone stand in the area during installation, to help compress the floor to the joist as the screws are being secured.

Your product also incorporates a shim, what gives?

You're right. Our product does incorporate a small shim as part of the design, however, unlike a wooden shim which is quite long and thick, our patented micro-shim design provides a shim that is both super thin and limited in length.

Unlike the wooden shim which is used primarily to fill the void between the joist and subfloor, our micro-shim was designed primarily to correctly position the brace for installation and to allow the brace to be held in position while being installed.

The micro-shim also eliminates some of the gap that may exist between the floor and joist but because of its limited size it will not damage the surrounding area as would a standard wooden shim.

We also now have a brace "Quick-Tack" pin to help hold the bracket in place while drilling.
